The North Yakima
Conservation
District (NYCD)
is dedicated to
maintaining
North Yakima
County's
renewable
natural
resources. The
District is
composed of
farmers,
landowners and
concerned
citizens who
serve on NYCD's
Board of
Supervisors as
volunteers.
NYCD is bordered
by the crest of
the Cascades to
the west and the
Columbia River
to the east with
the Yakima
County line and
Ahtanum Ridge
forming the
northern and
southern
boundaries
respectfully.
The NYCD is a
legal
subdivision of
Washington State
government
organized under
“Conservation
District Law,”
RCW Title 89,
Chapter 89.08.
What does the
District do?
The North Yakima
Conservation
District:
* Encourages and
promotes the
preservation and
optimum beneficial
use agricultural,
range and forested
lands.
* Helps landowners
plan and implement
“Best Management
Practices” (BMP's)
that reduce soil
erosion, improve
water quality and
water conservation,
as well as protect
the natural resource
base of NYCD.
*Furnishes soils
information,
conservation maps
and knowledge of
Best Management
Practices to
landowners and land
managers.
* Initiates surveys,
research studies,
comprehensive plans,
demonstration and
implementation
projects on public
and private lands
within the District.
* Conducts
responsible and
accountable
management and
financial business.
* Provides
educational
opportunities to
local schools and
the general public.
* Provides federal,
state and local
governmental
agencies with
conservation
leadership.
How does the
District get these
things done?
A five-member,
volunteer Board of
Supervisors made up
of District
landowners, develops
and administers the
District program.
They are assisted by
other volunteers who
serve as Associate
Supervisors. The
Board provides
on-the-ground
technical assistance
for BMP's to
District cooperators
and landowners from
the USDA Natural
Resources
Conservation Service
(NRCS) and NYCD
staff. Cost-share
assistance is
obtained for
implementation of
specific BMP's
through local,
state, and federal
funding sources as
incentives to
cooperators.
How does the
District relate to
other government
agencies?
The North Yakima
Conservation
District works with
all units of
government,
commodity groups and
individuals in an
effort to use,
protect and enhance
the District's
natural resources.
Through use of
Memorandums of
Agreement and
Understanding NYCD
is able to work with
many federal, state
and local entities
to better protect
the natural resource
base.
