Water Metering Program
The Water Metering
Program is designed to
provide assistance to
land owners seeking to
meet the metering
requirements under the
Yakima Basin Metering
Order. Through grant
funding, the North
Yakima Conservation
District is able to
provide technical and
cost share assistance to
offset some or most of
the costs of meter
installation.

What is the
Metering Order?
The metering order
was issued by the Yakima
County Superior Court in
2005, it required all
surface water rights
below 2000 feet in
elevation to have an
approved water measuring
device installed by
April 2006, and all
surface water rights
above 2000 feet to have
an approved water
measuring device
installed by April 2007.
Metering requirements
have since been expanded
to include new ground
water permits, or ground
water rights that have
changed place or purpose
of use.
Since the metering
deadlines have passed,
are there any penalties
for installing a meter
now?
No, the Department of
Ecology has not yet
begun to enforce the
Metering Order
requirements, and is
allowing us to continue
providing cost share
assistance. However,
this situation is not
likely to continue for
long, and once Ecology
does begin enforcing the
metering requirements
you will be responsible
for the entire cost of
installing a meter if
you do not have one
already installed.
How much of my
meter can be paid for
under the program?
For the majority of
water meters, those
under $3,000, the
district will cover 100%
after the first $250.
The cost share
percentage decreases for
meters over $3000.
How do you apply?
Fill out and submit a
Water Measuring Device
Cost Share Application
and submit an estimate
from a contractor. If
the meter is a
pressurized pipe meter
include the Evaluation
Form for Selection of a
Meter for Pressurized
Pipe Meters. Once the
forms are received the
Conservation District
will develop a cost
share contract, which
will need to be signed
prior to the
installation work being
done.
